So when asking, “does email marketing still work?” the only possible answer is: Absolutely!
Email marketing is recognised to be the best way to nurture leads, increase brand awareness and drive sales, above social media, affiliate marketing or advertising.
I’ll cover later on specific email marketing strategies to increase sales and so much more.
Importantly, I’ll uncover my email marketing strategy to 10x email list-building growth so you can build yours fast.
You might be reading and thinking... “This all sounds super appealing; however, I’m not quite sure what is an email marketing strategy...”
I’ve got you covered!
That’s totally fine, my friend. I’ve been there too! Once you finish this blog, you’ll be all pumped up and know what to do to get started or accelerate your email list build and biz income.
So let’s cover the basics first.
Email marketing is a type of marketing that uses emails to help build your brand, expand your content reach and send promotional material about your product or your services. It can be used, for instance, to drive your email subscribers to take action, like buying a product, signing up to a free trial or an event. But don’t worry; not every email is a sales push! It shouldn’t.
A successful email marketing strategy isn’t a sleazy strategy.
Most of our email inboxes are filled with automated emails that are useless. Getting rid of them is just another boring task to do as part of your daily email management. Most aren't read or even opened.
We’re inundated with email marketing campaigns, and some still feel spammy. Still, there’s no denying the impact a well-crafted message can have on your customers—not to mention customer relationship management and lead nurturing.
Creating an email marketing strategy starts with understanding the 4 different stages of email marketing strategy:
1. Email marketing strategy for list building
2. Email marketing strategy to nurture and sell
3. Email marketing strategy automation
4. Email marketing strategy optimization
Literally, you start by developing a strategy to gather emails and grow your email list subscribers. You then develop email marketing strategies to have a common touch point with your subscribers to build brand awareness and trust and promote your products.
As you grow your email list, you get automation to become efficient and gather insights about your list.
And, as with everything, you rinse and repeat by looking at your analytics, experimenting and doubling down on what’s working.
I cover each of these stages in detail below so that you can move into action.
Email is an essential component of a marketing strategy; its success relies mainly on how well you craft your email marketing plan.
Effective email marketing begins with the correct email marketing strategy.
Getting your ideal target customer to give you their email doesn’t happen by chance. Random emails to subscribers of your email list can create the opposite of your desired effect.
Email campaigns are an essential part of inbound marketing, an ongoing process and philosophy where marketers meet buyers at whatever stage of their journey.
So having an email marketing plan, even if you keep it simple, will always pay off.
It’s time well spent!
You can achieve plenty when you use your website for your email marketing strategy.
If you want to succeed with email marketing, tailoring your email list building to your website is an excellent email marketing strategy.
Consider including email sign-up forms that are easy for visitors to fill out so they can join your email list.
Design the forms (and thank you pages) optimized for mobile devices and other channels like social media.
To gain plenty of time, your email marketing plan should also include email automation so you can send out email campaigns in an automated way regularly (more about this later!). Automation will save you time and money while still allowing you to build great relationships with your leads and customers.
Finally, it’s crucial to track your email campaigns’ performance using analytics to see what’s working and isn’t. This will help you decide on email optimization, content creation, and other aspects of email marketing to increase email open rates, click-throughs, and conversions.
Following the steps outlined above, you can create an email marketing strategy tailored to your website for maximum success.
In addition, if you’re a small business owner of an e-commerce shop, your email marketing strategy is literally the best way to reach your target audience.
Email marketing allows you to build relationships with customers, so they return and purchase more items from you and recommend your store to their friends and family.
Word of mouth is a powerful tool!
In terms of email marketing strategy for e-commerce stores, consider including email sign-up forms on every page of your website, an email opt-in pop-up to capture email addresses when visitors arrive at your site, lead magnets and freebies (such as downloadable PDFs or discounts) to encourage email sign-ups, email automation such as welcome emails, follow-up emails and abandoned cart emails.
You can also use email segmentation to target email lists with more specific email campaigns. More about this later.
So let’s now get to the different stages of successful email marketing strategies.
Creating an email marketing strategy starts with attracting your ideal customers to sign up for your email list.
I know it can feel scary when you start.
The advice that you will hear, again and again, from all successful online entrepreneurs is that they wish they had started creating an email marketing strategy much earlier. I’m among them too!
The number 1 online business strategy that will help you make money online is to get started with your email marketing strategy.
And like me and many others, you’ll have many questions, doubts, and things that you aren’t quite sure how to do or whether they’ll work.
It just doesn’t matter.
What matters is to start building your email list early and take imperfect action.
Some things won’t work. Some others will work much better than you expected. By doing, you’ll learn.
So step 1 is to debunk any of your fears and doubts and decide to build your email marketing strategy... even if you haven’t got a website or you haven’t got a product to sell! That might surprise you, but building your email list is more crucial than your website or product creation. Fact!
Unblocking your mindset about creating an email marketing strategy will help you take action. Don’t underestimate all the hidden gremlins that may be holding you back.
Once you have embraced action, it’s time to set the goals of your email marketing strategy.
Let’s keep it simple, typically your email marketing strategy will help you:
Create brand awareness
Drive traffic to your website, landing pages and/or shop
Nurture your leads by creating trust
And obviously, generate revenue
If you don’t like maths, don’t worry, the email list provider will give you most of this.
Before you can start emailing, you must define your target audience(s). Knowing who are your customers (or potential customers) will help you plan the content of your email strategy.
Email marketing is about building relationships and nurturing leads, but for this to work, you need to talk their language.
This step is often skipped and is critical in your email marketing strategy! So please don’t pass it too quickly.
When you know your target audience, what they care about, what they struggle with, and what they dream of, you’ll create an email marketing strategy that will engage and CONVERT!
Now that you have an email list-building goal and an email target audience, it is time to create an email sign-up opt-in form.
This email opt-in form will be the door to your email list, so make sure you create a compelling offer to use as an incentive for email sign-ups.
Think of it like this: your email opt-in form is a page that entices people to join your email list and gives them value. This could be an email course, an ebook, a free trial, or a discount.
Make sure the offer reflects the needs of your email target audience and provides actual value to them.
Here is an example of my own mail marketing signup form to watch my free Pinterest workshop:
Let’s just make it simple with some examples of email marketing lead magnets:
Adding a quiz or a contest on your website and your social media channels is a great way to engage with potential customers and get email sign-ups. Quizzes are especially effective for email list building since they help you build email lists with users interested in your services or products and can help you segment them based on their answers.
Contests are also great email list-building strategies since they offer an incentive for people to sign up, such as a chance to win a prize or get a discount code.
Here is another example for you of another one of my lead magnets, a free cheat sheet with 12 blogging ideas to make money from home:
Pinterest is a fantastic platform for email list building.
It’s estimated that up to 70% of pins on Pinterest are primarily about generating leads, growing email lists and creating email opt-ins.
My own experience: Pinterest is my number 1 email marketing strategy because it’s a platform that quickly drives traffic outside the platform. It brings more than 80% of my email list growth, which is hugely significant compared to the traffic I gain from social media, with 4 times more followers.
There are many powerful reasons why Pinterest is so powerful in building your email marketing strategy and accelerating your email list building.
You can:
Easily link directly to your email marketing sign-up forms with static and video pins on Pinterest.
Create a valuable form of valuable evergreen content to attract your ideal audience to your email marketing strategy with idea pins, which will include a link from 2023.
Experiment with different lead magnets to see what works best as you can post different pins for different lead magnets.
Drive traffic to long-form content outside Pinterest, like your blog or your YouTube channel, where you can can signup forms to further enhance your email marketing strategies.
Attract your target audience with different content pillars on Pinterest using different boards.
You don’t need:
Thousands and thousands of followers like on social media or years of domain authority building like in Google to rank on Pinterest.
A website, you can create all your Pinterest content just your phone.
And importantly, Pinterest users are action takers, not just endless scrollers, so the conversions for email list building are great!
Don’t forget to watch my FREE Pinterest workshop to discover how to grow your email list with Pinterest in just 2 hours per week.
You can also use other forms of content to attract your ideal client with your email marketing strategy.
For example, I created the blog on my website to serve you with valuable and free content, and at the same time, it brings people to my email list sign-up forms on my blog directly from Google searches (and indirectly from Pinterest).
I love investing in learning Google SEO and creating long-form content for my blog as a way to deliver in-depth value (in contrast to the short-form content elsewhere.
You can create content on YouTube or social media and create a Call to Action (CTA) to your email list sign-up forms.
My personal experience (which is in line with many other online entrepreneurs) is that social media isn’t great for generating traffic to go outside their platform.
Pinterest is a magic traffic generator to your email list sign-up forms. That’s, in reality, the magic of Pinterest when compared to Instagram, Tiktok, Twitter or Facebook.
Whenever thinking about creating your email marketing strategy and how to drive traffic to your email sign-up forms, always consider the power of the platform where you create the content to facilitate traffic outside the platform easily. When thinking about the stages of email marketing strategy, the one related to building your email list and securing sign-ups is essential.
I see many needing help with their email growth, posting and posting on Instagram and not getting very far.
Creating an email list strategy in a platform that naturally generates TRAFFIC to your email list sign-up forms is of the most importance.
That’s exactly why Pinterest is my choice.
Perfect, now you are on your way to growing your email list. Let’s look at an often wholly forgotten aspect: nurturing your email list to sell easily.
What do I mean?
Well, let me tell you, I can’t even recall how many times I have heard a pear online entrepreneur share the same fact in a membership or group programme: “I have an email list, but I really don’t do much with it. I’m unsure what to write; a newsletter is too much work every week.”
Yeap, have no shame if you are in the same boat. You aren’t alone!
So let’s look at what it means to have the best email marketing strategies to nurture and sell, and importantly how to do it simply.
So, first of all, let’s make this point loud and clear.
There is no point in creating your email marketing strategy and building your email list to do nearly nothing with it.
Your subscribers will completely forget about you and why they gave you their email in the first instance if the only moment you send an email is when you want to sell something.
In sales, whether online or offline, I’ve seen it very clearly through my years in business, you need to build up trust with your prospects.
Here is an analogy for you.
And, by the way, this is the exact story of what we experienced as a family when buying our first classic Ferrari!
Your email list is exactly the same. You’re creating that brand story, desire, personal connection, and value that makes taking the next step, buying from you, a no-brainer.
Here comes something that will shock you...
Bin the idea of a newsletter!
Many start believing that sending an email to their email list creates a weekly online magazine by email. It becomes such a vast endeavour every week that it becomes unsustainable.
So approach your emails in your email list strategy without a rigid format, especially not a long one constantly. That will help you remove the overwhelm of “what-to-send-this-week?!”.
Perfect! Now that you have erased the myth of writing a complete, hugely long weekly newsletter, let’s see what you’re aiming for with your emails.
When looking at what are effective email marketing strategies, you will be thinking of the following:
Email list growth: how many new subscribers do you get per week/month?
Open rates: do people open your emails to read them?
Clicks: do people interact with the actions you include in your emails?
Engagement: do you get email responses? Do your emails create conversations with your email list?
Unsubscribes: how many unsubscribe from your list? How much is too much? What to do about it?
These elements will help you optimize your email list strategy for results. I’ve covered email list growth in the previous section, so let’s look at the rest.
Once you grow your list, this is one of the biggest battles in email marketing strategy.
You can write brrrrrrilliant emails to your email list, but they could be going to a black hole if your email list subscribers don’t open your emails.
Let’s be honest.
How many emails do we get bombarded with every day?
Sooooooo many. Too many. The large majority becomes noise. Fact! Noise to the point you can’t be bothered to click to open them.
That’s what open rates measure: the percentage of people who open your emails of the total number of people who receive them.
The best email marketing strategy for high open rates is to get better at your email titles.
47% of email recipients only open the mail based on the subject line.
Here are a series of best practices to increase the impact and results from your email. There are pro tips that I have used and tested myself and will undoubtedly boost how your email list subscribers will respond to your emails.
The email content is one part of the marketing process, but what about getting people to click on your email offers?
This depends heavily on how you craft your email calls to action (CTAs).
Your goal should be to invite readers to take just two actions: either click a link or reply back.
By consistently following the email marketing strategies outlined above, you will see a significant increase in email list building, open rates, engagement levels, and CTRs from your email campaigns. Take some time to experiment with different approaches and track your results.
Another great way to drive clicks from your emails is to include a video GIF that links to a short video. It’s pretty irresistible to receive a video preview and not click to watch it. This technique is only used by a few, and it will make you stand out.
Alternatively, create the irresistible urge to click on a link and watch a video by sending a short email and a link to watch it.
This is widely used by Neil Patel in his email marketing strategy. See the example below.
Lastly, don’t forget that driving clicks gets your email subscribers to interact with you and your content. Clicks aren’t always associated with sales or promotions.
You can drive clicks through your email marketing strategy content with the following:
Links to long-form content like a blog or a YouTube video
An instant downloadable
Access to a new freebie (instead of expecting your email list subscribers to sign up for it, give it to them with a one-click)
Invites to free events
A dedicated short-form video
Exclusive access to content that only your email list subscribers can get
Any of the above will drive clicks but, importantly, build engagement and trust by delivering value without constantly selling.
Now that you know how to use email marketing strategies to drive clicks, let’s see how you can make sales through email.
The key here is to understand the needs of your email list subscribers and provide them with the right solution for their problems. That’s why storytelling techniques can be widely used in email campaigns.
By creating a story about your email list subscribers, you can create an emotional connection and tell them that you understand their needs. In other words, it helps to build trust with email subscribers.
Another email marketing strategy for sales is to focus on urgency. It would help if you made your email list subscribers act now before they miss out on something great. This could be a special discount, a limited-time offer or a sale.
Finally, email list segmentation is also one of the email marketing strategies to increase sales. By segmenting your email list into different categories (e.g., gender, location, past purchases), you can tailor your email campaigns to specific needs and interests.
Following the email marketing strategies outlined above, you can maximize your sales through email campaigns and build a reliable email list over time.
And, above all, don’t be shy!
Many feel a mental barrier to sending promotional emails to their email list subscribers for fear of unsubscribes. Just remember that you are in an online business to make money selling. You’re consistently providing a ton of free value to your audience. What’s more, your email list subscribers need you to help them make confident decisions to help them with their current problems and achieve their goals and dreams. So selling and promoting, you are helping your audience go to the next level. Don’t feel sleazy. Don’t be afraid.
What you have to offer is fab, and you want the world to know about it.
Plan to have regular promotional emails as part of your email marketing strategy. And be ready to do the follow-up that might be needed when people want to know more or ask you questions. That’s the best sign of interest!
And as always, my friend, the more you do it, the more natural it will feel!
Here is an example of one of my emails to promote my signature programme, The Profitable Pinterest Secrets:
Implementing your email marketing strategy manually can become truly time-consuming fast. So quickly, you will ask yourself what email marketing service provider to use for your email marketing strategy.
MailChimp is the first choice for many at the beginning because it helps you start for free but has many limitations pretty quickly. A more robust solution is ConvertKit, which is recommended and used by many.
I started with ConvertKit because it was free. However, very quickly, I took the most strategic decision I’ve ever taken on tools and systems: I learned and started using Kartra as my all-in-one marketing platform. Why?
Kartra helps me do all of these online activities:

Measure the email list growth, email open rates and email engagement to evaluate the success of your email marketing strategy. Test different freebies and opt-in forms too.
It is through analytics and experimentation that you’ll achieve the best results!
Buying email marketing lists can be tempting, but it’s essential to know that this is not a legal or ethical email list-building option.
If you purchase an email list, you risk getting into legal trouble with email spam laws; not all email list sellers are legitimate.
The email addresses you get from email lists may be outdated or fake, affecting email delivery rates and damaging your reputation as a sender. Plus, email recipients may feel deceived because they have not signed up to receive emails from you.
Yes, email marketing is legal as long as it follows email spam laws and other data protection laws like EU GDPR.
You must get explicit consent from people to email them, and they should be able to opt out or unsubscribe at any time.
You also have to ensure that your email messages are not misleading and that the content matches the subscription topic they signed up for.
There are many email marketing platforms available on the market.
Kartra is a great all-in-one marketing platform that includes a powerful email marketing functionality, including automation and segmentation features.
if you want to start completely for free, I recommend Convertkit.
Converkit is another excellent alternative for email marketing and automation.
My choice every day will be Kartra as it eliminates the headache of integrations.
A newsletter can be part of your email marketing strategy if you choose to go down that route. An email newsletter is typically used to inform readers about a range of topics or focuses of interest and often consists of short pieces of content such as articles, blog posts, images, and videos.
However, you can define an email marketing strategy that doesn’t use a newsletter style, and it’s more conversational or storytelling base. It’s entirely up to you and what works best for your audience.
When it comes to email marketing, you can design newsletter templates or send text-based emails.
Designing email newsletters can help your email stand out and look more professional while reinforcing your branding. On the other hand, text-based emails allow you to get right to the point with short messages that can be easier to read and more direct.
Choose the email format that best suits your email marketing strategy and helps you achieve your email list-building goals.
Generally speaking, a heavily designed newsletter will give a more promotional and marketing feeling, while text-based emails are more conversational.
My view and experience are that for online entrepreneurs, especially if you have a personal brand, text-based emails are far more engaging and close to a one-on-one conversation.
Heavily formatted emails can much easier land in the spam or promotion folder. So be mindful of using email marketing strategy templates!
It’s widespread to find offers for done-for-you swipe copy for your email marketing strategy.
It can certainly save you a lot of time to use someone else’s copy...
However, if your emails don’t sound like you, your voice isn’t authentic, and you will struggle to establish the connection you want with your email marketing strategy.
My own personal experience with swipe copy for my email marketing strategy is that you can use it as a basis to get inspired.
Especially at the beginning and for launch campaigns, it can be beneficial to read examples of email sequences. You then need to adapt them and make them yours.
Nothing is more powerful than your own stories.
Nothing has a better impact than your own personality.
Having said that, you can benefit from referring to examples as references. Never copy and paste, though! It won’t sound genuine to your list!
It is important to craft original email messages that align with your brand and resonate with your target audience. Crafting original email campaigns will help you stand out and build trust with your subscribers.
There are many email marketing strategies that you can use. Here are a few examples:
Welcome email sequences – these emails welcome new subscribers to your email list and inform them about the benefits of being part of your email list.
Re-engagement email sequences – these emails target inactive subscribers and remind them about why they subscribed and the value of being part of your email list.
Launch email sequences – these emails focus on driving sales by informing subscribers about a new product or service launch.
Upsell email sequences – these emails target existing customers and inform them about related products or services that may be beneficial to them.
Follow-up email sequences – these email sequences follow up with customers after purchase and keep them updated with new products, services, or promotions.
Nurture email sequences – these emails are sent to gradually build relationships with your subscribers.

You don’t necessarily need a website to use email marketing. Although it is much easier and more efficient to have a website, email marketing can still be effective without one.
In this case, you will need to direct your email subscribers to external links or landing pages where they can find out more about what you are offering.
This could be a social media page, a blog post, or an online store.
When it comes to email marketing, setting measurable goals and objectives is critical. You need to define what you want to achieve with your email campaigns to know if they are successful.
Your email marketing goals should be SMART – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Timely.
For example, if you want to increase email list sign-ups, your goal might be “to increase email list sign-ups by 10% in 4 weeks”.
Once you have set a specific goal, you can start thinking of ways to achieve it. This could include:
defining your target audience/personas,
testing different freebies and opt-in forms,
creating A/B email tests and other strategies to build your email list
crafting compelling CTA’s for clicks, using storytelling techniques in emails to encourage sales,
utilizing email automation tools like Kartra for the segmentation of list.
When it comes to email list growth, there are a few strategies that you can use.
Test different opt-in forms and incentives – testing different opt-in forms such as pop-up windows and sidebar widgets can help determine which performs best. You can also experiment with various incentives for signing up, such as discounts or freebies.
Offer discounts and special email-only promotions – offering exclusive discounts or email-only promotions can effectively grow your email list.
Leverage social media channels - using various social media platforms to promote your email sign-up forms can be an effective strategy for email list growth.
Use content upgrades - content upgrades are pieces of content that are related to the topic of a blog post and offered as an incentive for email subscribers.
Leverage email segmentation – email segmentation is essential for email list growth. Segmenting your email list into different categories allows you to create targeted email campaigns that are more likely to result in conversions.
Collabs – collaborate with other online entrepreneurs in your niche or adjacent niches and host an event or joint freebie where you are introduced to someone else’s email list. This is a highly effective way to grow your list.
Use email address collection forms on your website – these email address collection forms are often used for newsletter subscriptions and can be an effective way of growing your email list.
In summary, you can grow your email list faster and more effectively by using these email marketing strategies. Create an email strategy with measurable goals and use testing to optimize open rates and engagement levels. Use Pinterest for email list growth and storytelling in emails to encourage sales. Automate your email campaigns with Kartra.
Usually, when you create an email marketing sign-up form, you create 1 page for it and use the same address across all the platforms where you’ve a presence.
To level up your email marketing strategy results, you want to understand what source brings you more traffic and email subscriber sign-ups. The easiest way to do this is to duplicate your sign-up form and give it a different link to then analyse which link brings the most signups.
It’s entirely up to you to create as many variations of the email marketing sign-up page as you want.
Secondly, when someone signs up, you can tag them using your automation tools (Kartra offers this) so that you can analyze the source of your leads.
You can also look at the volume of traffic to each sign-up page with Google analytics. I prefer the tagging method, as it enables you to track conversions (actual sign-ups), not just traffic.
The beauty of tagging is that it builds a depth of understanding per lead. You could also create different thank-you pages for different sources, resulting in your ability to see similar analytics with tagging.
Whatever method you decide to follow, now you have a great way to double down on the source of most of your sign-ups and develop an even better and more effective email marketing strategy! Yeah!
