Consider your Pinterest cover photo as the cover of a magazine or the main display window of your shop. Either you have an attractive and clear frontage or your ideal audience will move on and won’t stop to look at your account for more than a fraction of a second.

Based on this critical principle, here are the 3 objectives you want to achieve that I use on my Pinterest strategy:

  1. To stop the scroll with an inspiring visual design that conveys what your Pinterest account is all about

  2. To create brand awareness with your brand name, promise and vibe

  3. To grow your email list with a Call To Action that offers an irresistible freebie

Now that you’re looking at your Pinterest photo cover size strategically, my friend, let’s utilize this premium space to your advantage, ensuring it’s optimized both for desktop and mobile app.

To extract maximum value from your premium space on the Pinterest cover photo, what you include on your Pinterer cover photo matters.

Over the years I’ve experimented with a number of variations on my Pinterest cover photo. From a collage of pins, to a striking photo to the design I use today.

So I’m sharing here with you my optimized Pinterest cover photo design so you get the best results.

To achieve the 3 strategic objectives we talked about before, this is what to include:

  • An inspiring photo that shows you or a niche-related inspiring image. Ensure it is well lit. It doesn’t need to be taken by a professional photographer but it needs to look professional and sharp.

  • Your brand name

  • Your brand strapline with your promise

  • A Call To Action (CTA) to get your freebie, including your freebie outcom

  • A mockup of your freebie (optional)

See these elements below in my Pinterest profile cover.

The Pinterest cover photo doesn’t have to be a headshot. You can choose to use a niche related photo (an inspiring living room decor, a fashion related photo…). You get the gist!

The thing is, many refine their Pinterest cover photo for desktop and totally forget to make it mobile-friendly. You know better than that, my friend, that’s why you’ve reached this point of the blog.

In today's world where more than 50% of your audience is using Pinterest on mobile, such an oversight can be costly.

But be mindful, if you want your Pinterest cover photo to work on the Pinterest phone app as well as on desktop, there is more to it than just this ideal Pinterest photo cover size.

There are areas in the cover photo design where you should not add any important elements! Why? They’ll be obscured on the phone app by Pinterest overlay icons. What should you do?

How can you achieve a Pinterest cover photo size that also looks fab on the phone app?

There are a few areas you need to be very aware of in your design where you shouldn’t put anything. Here there are. Check out the example I have included with my Pinterest cover photo and how I have handled these areas in my Pinterest profile.

In a nutshell, never put any important information such as your brand name or CTA in these areas:

  • The 324 pixels high on the top (Pinterest icons get overlaid here)

  • Half a circle, at the bottom, in the middle, where your Pinterest profile photo goes. It start at approximately at 824 pixels from the top (see graphic below).

Sounds like a bit of a nightmare to get all this right? I’ve got you covered, my friend.
