Searching on Pinterest: Your secret content marketing strategy to attract your ideal client every time

Can searching on Pinterest really become your secret content marketing strategy? Are you not sure if you attract your ideal client with the content you make? You think you have a great website, and you post on social media regularly still, people are just not buying. You think you are doing something wrong or that your ideal client isn’t yet where you have content. Here is how searching on Pinterest will help you become magnetic with your content:

With Pinterest's visually appealing and highly shareable format, searching on Pinterest has become a secret weapon to catapult content marketing to the next level for small businesses like yours.

In this blog, we will explore how you can unlock the full potential of searching on Pinterest to showcase your brand, get into the psyche of your audience, increase website traffic with highly searched keywords and the latest trends, and ultimately attract your ideal client with irresistible content.

Full disclosure: This post may contain affiliate links that, at no additional cost to you, I may earn a small commission from.

If you aren’t sure you attract your ideal client with the content you create, it’s time to pause and go back to the starting point. This is where searching on Pinterest comes super powerful!

Challenge yourself with the question: how well do you really understand your audience?

Is audience research a one-off thing?

You might have heard it a million times by now, and you could be about to think: “Not again, this thing about research your audience!”

Well, my friend, this is not a one-off activity you do when you start and check off your to-do list to never do it again. Large, medium, and small marketing agencies will spend thousands and thousands doing that repeatedly.

You’re an online entrepreneur, a small business owner without the budgets these agencies have, and your time is CONSTRAINED, I know. So the critical question is: do you really have the time for audience research again?

The simple answer is that you should.

Why? Imagine a house without foundations. The walls crumble quickly.

Don’t expect that fabulously looking website to sell for you unless you understand deep down your audience, and you refresh your insights regularly.

The more you know, the more your content will become magnetic and products a natural decision to purchase! So let’s see how searching on Pinterest can help you with your audience research.

Searching on Pinterest for fast audience insights

Searching on Pinterest is the #1 thing your audience does to plan and get inspired. This is not me saying it because I love Pinterest. Worldwide research has found that Pinterest is considered the #1 platform for inspiration.

With that in mind, searching on Pinterest for what your audience wants is a golden nugget.

A Pinterest search can create that. But how can you be searching on Pinterest to get your audience insights that you so much want?

The simplest way is to look at Pinterest suggestions for your niche in the Ideas section of Pinterest. Pinterest suggestions change frequently based on the most searched terms and the latest trends. This is a gold mine of audience research that not many know about. Just have a look at how easily searching on Pinterest gives you insights on:

  • Top Pinterest searches

  • Explore ideas by popular topics for your audience

  • Top 10 ideas

  • Ideas that stand out, fresh ideas for your niche

  • Popular videos

  • Featured articles (highly recommended to understand your audience)

  • More inspiration

  • Discover Pinterest creators in your niche (more about that later!)

  • Discover boards for your niche (more about that later too!)

Later on, I will show you a very powerful tool for trends to keep on researching your audience by searching on Pinterest. For now, let’s keep it simple.

Searching on Pinterest using the search bar

I find the ideas section when searching on Pinterest is a great way to research your audience from their perspective because you aren’t using your words for the search, but Pinterest gives you what they search for. While searching on Pinterest, this puts you at the heart of your audience's interests.

Sometimes, you need to niche down more.

In that case, the Pinterest search bar is your friend! Simple and powerful, too!

Compile a few words related to your niche and type them one by one on Pinterest. Watch the suggestions for searches pop up in the drop-down menu. All those words are frequent searches. Bingo!

I suggest that you spend time doing these three activities:

Here is how it is done:

Searching on Pinterest for today’s trending content

Once you start searching on Pinterest regularly and saving content, Pinterest will learn your interest and related niche. That means it will suggest more and more content automatically related to your area of biz.

At that point, you can also use the Today page to drill into searching on Pinterest for today’s suggested content for you.

That’s a complementary way to add to your audience research insights.

Searching on Pinterest isn’t the ultimate audience research tool!

As much as I looooove the power of Pinterest marketing, there is nothing that replaces talking to your ideal clients directly and asking them about their struggles, their goals, their dreams, their roadblocks and missteps.

The fact is that we all start from zero. I clearly remember this advice about talking to your customers at the beginning of my online journey. It was so discouraging! What clients? What audience?

I considered myself a bit of an introvert, and the thought of reaching out to people I don’t know to shape my own business was dreadful! So if you are at that stage, you have plenty of other avenues.

Searching on Pinterest to research your ideal client is very powerful, as the planning and buying intention on Pinterest is the highest compared to social media.

You can also do:

  • Search forums like Quora and Reddit for FAQ

  • Search up Facebook groups

  • Analyse the best-performing content for your competitors on Google, Instagram, YouTube

  • Search Amazon and analyse product reviews

And if you already have an audience or an email list:

  • Create a survey for your email list

  • Ask your audience on social media with polls

The list goes on. Searching on Pinterest to start your audience research is a powerful way to visually gain insights and then use other methods to complement it.

So here's the deal: knowing your audience deeply and continually refreshing your insights is the key to creating magnetic content and products that sell. It's like having the blueprint to craft content that's so spot-on it attracts your ideal client like a magnet.

As an online entrepreneur or content creator, you’re always on the lookout for new content ideas and inspiration. That’s precisely the power of Pinterest, inspiration!

There are many ways of searching on Pinterest, so let’s start with that!

How to search on Pinterest

When you seek inspiration for your content ideas, there is nothing better than letting yourself navigate freely to brainstorm in different places.

You might be used to searching on Pinterest by using the search bar. Pinterest has a mighty AI engine that fuels its visual search engine capabilities.

First things first, let’s make sure you spot different ways to navigate Pinterest. Ready?

Searching on Pinterest can be done in so many different ways by:

  • Typing on the search bar

  • Using the colour bubbles at the top

  • “Related searched”

  • Selecting an area on a photo (mega cool!)

  • Using the filter menu and search by videos, boards, profiles or products

  • Looking at “More like this”

  • “Shop Similar menu” among the pin results

  • Clicking on the “Profiles” button

There is nothing better than exploring the other suggestions of related ideas suggested by Pinterest.

The easiest way to niche down for your content ideas is to use the colour bubbles right at the top.

A different (and fascinating) way to brainstorm ideas for your content is to look at related searches that your audience frequently does. These are content ideas that you might not have thought of, or that relate to your niche and can be great for expanding your content pillar.

So, wander around the “Other searches” menu to find content ideas.

And obviously, don’t forget to click on the pins that are super inspiring to you and then explore the “More like this” section right underneath. This way of searching on Pinterest for content ideas helps you be truly targeted once you have spent time in a wider brainstorming search.

Searching on Pinterest for Boards

If you’re new to Pinterest, you may not know what a Pinterest board is. In a nutshell, Pinterest boards are a way to save pins around collections of themes. The best comparison is the folders on your computer.

Pinterest boards provide a simple way to easily find content ideas related to a certain subject as well as sort out pins in a Pinterest account.

They also become a fab way to find content ideas in a targeted way for you. Here is how you can approach searching on Pinterest for boards:

Pinterest SEO might sound fancy, but it's your secret weapon to get noticed in the Pinterest jungle. SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization," and on Pinterest, it means using the right keywords and descriptions to make your pins pop up in search results. So, when someone searches for "cute puppy pics" and you've got adorable dog photos, they can find your pins easily.

Simply put, a Pinterest keyword is what is most searched on Pinterest. They are the words that people type on Pinterest most frequently to look for inspiration.

So, while it may seem like another chore, searching on Pinterest for keywords is your secret weapon to building a thriving online presence. Keywords on Pinterest are in many places:

  • The search bar

  • The trends tools

  • The colour bubbles

  • “Related searched”

  • “Shop Similar” menu among the pin results

The collection of words that pop up in these places are all keywords that you can inject through your Pinterest profile, pins and Pinterest boards.

Searching on Pinterest on app

Searching on Pinterest on app is as simple, if not even more straightforward, than on desktop. There isn’t a need for a full tutorial on how to search on Pinterest app. Just look at the screenshot below.

You can also look for Related searches and Shop similar menus by scrolling down like on desktop. You also can access the filter menu and the Profiles button when searching on Pinterest on app.

The one thing you won’t be able to do is access the Trends tool. For that, you need to use the desktop version of Pinterest.

Why can't I search on Pinterest anymore

There are a few reasons why this might happen, but generally speaking, this is very rare. If it happens, go and clear your web browser cache. On Google Chrome, click the 3 dots on the top left, select the History menu and click Clear Browsing Data.

Obviously, other reasons could be that your internet or wi-fi is down or Pinterest servers are down. I have personally never come across Pinterest being down, yet, it could happen. In that case, give it a few minutes.

Can you search for someone on Pinterest

Pinterest isn’t a social media platform, and Pinterest users don’t generally go on the platform searching for brands. They look for inspiration.

So don’t expect to type the name of a friend and for it to pop up. Pinterest isn’t Facebook!

You saw before how you can search for Pinterest profiles and, clearly, you can type the Pinterest account name of someone and find it.

Advanced search tips for searching on Pinterest

Well, this blog has covered most of them. Let’s recap! You can use:

  • The search bar

  • The suggested colour bubbles

  • The Related Searches menu

  • The “Shop Similar” menu

  • The Profiles button

  • The filter functionality

  • The “More like this” suggested pins

  • The visual search on a pin

  • The trends tools

  • The Ideas section

  • The Ideas for you

  • The Today page

  • Your Pinterest feed

As you see, Pinterest has opened up a world of options to find inspiration in the way that best suits you. It has a powerful AI algorithm that suggests related pins based on your past searches and pins you have interacted with.

How many times have you wished, as an online entrepreneur, that your client could easily share with you an inspirational board so that you can see fast what they have in mind?

There are many uses of Pinterest boards as part of your customer journey. I’ll take here a couple of examples for copywriters and web designers so that you can imagine the possibilities for you!

Using Pinterest boards for brand vibe for copywriters or website design briefings might feel odd to you if you’ve never heard of it.

So here is the secret sauce.

If you’re a copywriter or web designer, you’re very familiar with things like brand vibe, tone of voice, power words, brand colours, website template styles, and so on. However, your clients aren’t.

Many of your clients will struggle to convey in words what they like with enough precision for you to turn around something they’ll love.

Here comes a silly but true analogy! Haha!

Pinterest has become a powerful platform for online entrepreneurs like you, for your copy and web design client projects, to ask your clients to capture with pins what they love.

Back to the point.

I’ve put together a Pinterest board with the things I love, for her. That board helps her form a view of the vibe I’m into, what inspires me and moves me. It’s a great insight into who I am.

Are Pinterest boards the only thing you should be using? Obviously not. However, it’s a super easy way to exchange visually with your client and get into their wavelength!
