So while it’s essential to understand the different places you can go to join a programme, trying too many things (specially because affiliate networks and affiliate directories provide soooooooo many choices) might get paralysed by the sheer choice as an affiliate marketing beginner.
Hence, I suggest you start with the products and services you love and see whether you can join their affiliate programme.

Now that we have that out of the way, here are the different places to find affiliate programs you can apply to join an affiliate programme.
1. Affiliate networks
Affiliate networks are third-party intermediaries between merchants and affiliate marketers. They provide affiliate marketers with a platform to search for and find appropriate merchant affiliate programs to promote, as well as tracking and payments.

Affiliate directories are websites that curate and list affiliate programs from different merchants in one place, making it easier for affiliate marketers to find appropriate programs to promote.
Some popular affiliate directories include:
3. Google search for a specific affiliate programme
You can also find affiliate programs to promote through a simple Google search. For example, if you’re in the health and fitness niche, you could search for “health and fitness affiliate programs”.
This will bring up a list of relevant programs you can research further.
4. Merchant websites
Another way to find affiliate programs is to go directly to the merchant’s website. Many merchants will have an “Affiliates” or “Partners” page, which lists their affiliate program details.
If you don’t find an affiliate programme, sometimes it pays off to type the merchant’s name followed by “Affiliate Programme” in Google. I have found several programmes for online educators like that.
5. Social media groups
Many social media groups are also dedicated to affiliate marketing, such as the Affiliate Marketers of Reddit group. These groups can be a great way to find new programmes to promote and get advice from other experienced affiliate marketers.
Once you’ve found some affiliate programs you want to promote, the next step is to sign up for their programme and start promoting their products on Pinterest.
Don’t get discouraged if some of the affiliate programs you want to join ask for things you haven’t yet.
That’s because some will want to see your website or a minimum number of blogs or content on your social media channels. Some expect you to have a minimum number of page views on your website and so on.
This was the second barrier I hit when starting with affiliate marketing... I got disappointed by some of the requirements of some affiliate programs.
My take now: don’t make the same mistake that me. It took me more than a year to go back at trying affiliate marketing. But when the first email hits your inbox with a commission, you wish you had started earlier!

Upgrade for free to a business account: just follow the on-screen instructions. Don’t worry. You don’t need to have an actual business set up, and you don’t need to have a website. So chill; anyone can upgrade for free.

Now that you have access to Pinterest, let me show you something super strategic on Pinterest. It’s called keywords, and it will make your content for your Pinterest affiliate marketing discoverable. Keywords are often used words by people to find content on Pinterest.
Keywords help Pinterest understand what your account is about as well as your content.
One of the most important best practices when using Pinterest is using keywords deliberately.
The easiest way to find keywords is to start typing in the Pinterest search bar and see the suggested drop-down menu that appears.

METHOD 1: Create a pin that links directly to your affiliate programme.
METHOD 2: Create a pin that links to content you have created about the product or service you’re promoting. Typically this is a blog, but it can also be a YouTube video. Through your content, you’ll have links to the affiliate programme.
METHOD 3: Create idea pins and use tags for the affiliate programme. The affiliate programs available through this Pinterest functionality are limited at this point, so don’t be surprised if you won’t find all affiliate programs.

How to do affiliate marketing on Pinterest to be successful
Stop scrolling Pinterest pin graphics and idea pin graphics
You’ll first need to create the pin or idea pin graphics to do this.
You can either:
create these yourself
buy Pinterest templates
outsource their creation to a graphic designer
If you decide to create them yourself, Canva is an excellent option as it’s easy and super impactful.

Method 1: Create a pin that links directly to your Pinterest affiliate programme
Once you have some pins created, you’ll need to start sharing them on Pinterest on relevant boards in your account.
You could also share your pins on relevant group boards. However, group boards have become less and less relevant on Pinterest. Group boards are collaborative boards where multiple users can contribute pins and are a way to reach a wider audience.
In Method 1, the link that you will enter when creating your pins is your unique affiliate link. That means that Pinterest users clicking on your pin will land directly on the sales page of what you’re promoting.
While it might be tempting to only use this method, this is the one that converts the least.

Method 2: Indirect Pinterest affiliate marketing: link to your content
The second way is to drive traffic to your blog, website or YouTube video and then promote affiliate products there.
This can demonstrate the value of the product or service you’re promoting. This is an indirect way to do affiliate marketing on Pinterest. Still, it’s a very effective one, especially for high-ticket items.

Idea pins is type of content format on Pinterest. They feel similar to Instagram Stories, but they don’t expire and are searchable. That means your idea pins will be discovered months after you’ve created them!
The power of idea pins is that it’s a way for you to create evergreen content on Pinterest without the need for a blog, a website or a YouTube channel.
Sweat, isn’t it? They are a fantastic way to showcase the products and services of your affiliate marketing on Pinterest.
However, idea pins don’t provide the ability to include links in the idea pin. “Oh no!” you might be thinking. Exactly, you and many are thinking exactly the same.
Don’t worry! Pinterest tags are here to help you be successful making money with affiliate marketing on Pinterest!
You can tag idea pins using affiliate links so that you earn a commission when people click through and buy.
Exactly, you can use idea pins to tag affiliate products.
However, this is only possible with specific affiliate programs and not all. So you might find that you can’t tag your product on idea pins. It’s still worth trying and absolutely worth creating idea pins as value content about your affiliate programs.
At the time of writing, affiliate networks and programs like Amazon Associates, ShopStyle Collective, and Rakuten Advertising are supported for affiliate marketing on Pinterest idea pins. However, please remember that not all affiliate programs are supported at this time and that Pinterest is working on expanding that list.
Please note that Pinterest isn’t part of affiliate agreements, so your commission will depend on the terms you’ve set with external merchants or programmes.
Finally, you can also use paid advertising on Pinterest to promote your pins. This can be done through Promoted Pins, ads that look and function just like regular pins but are shown to a broader audience.

Affiliate marketing is super rewarding. There is nothing like seeing an email when you wake up for a payout for purchases done by your audience on the products you promote.
The feeling is still unbelievable to me. It shows the trust someone puts in your recommendations and the joy of passive income coming to your bank account.
Now, there are some rules you need to follow to ensure that you don’t get banned from Pinterest, cancelled by your affiliate partner or get in trouble with the FDA for those of you in the USA (or equivalent financial regulators in your country).
High level, this is what you need to do:
Comply with the Pinterest guidelines for affiliate marketing in your country and, in general, Pinterest guidelines.
Comply with your affiliate programme’s terms (each programme is different. You will be given them when you apply to the affiliate programme).
Always disclose in your pins that it is an affiliate link (as well as in your content). As an example, see my disclosure at the beginning of this blog.
Check your country’s laws/regulations for affiliate marketing for more details.

You don’t have to have a website to do affiliate marketing on Pinterest.
You can send people directly to the affiliate sales page using method 1 from earlier in this blog (create a pin that links directly to the sales page).
Or, you can use idea pins (method 3) and tag to the product/service page. The key is to ensure you’re always transparent about the fact that it’s an affiliate link.
Having said that, when you go through the application process some affiliate programs will require you to have a website. Some even expect you to have a minimum number of blogs already published. And some will want to see existing content where you have already covered their product or service (what?!!!).
